Joint Injections

Joint Injections are commonly performed after a horse has been diagnosed with some degree of arthritis following a lameness exam and x-rays. Typically we recommend injecting the affected joint(s) with both a corticosteroid (betamethasone, triamcinolone, or methylprednisolone, ) and hyaluronic acid (Legend).

Joint injections are performed safely and sterilely, typically under sedation. Joint injections help decrease inflammation within the joint and improve joint health. Owner’s typically see improvements within the first few days with maximum effect within 1-4 weeks post injection. Joint injections typically last anywhere from 3-12 months, depending on the severity of the arthritis and use of the horse.
