Sudden illnesses and injuries to your horse can occur at any time. Be prepared with a well stocked first aid kit. It could save your horse's life. 

Here are the basic supplies you will need: 

·                     Thermometer (normal temp = 100 Degrees F)

·                     Stethoscope - to listen to heart rate (normal = 30-40 beats per minute) - to listen to gastrointestinal sounds (normal gurgling is always heard)

·                     Normal respiratory rate = 12 breaths per minute

·                     Watch with a second hand

·                     Iodine based surgical scrub (Betadine) - for washing wounds

·                     Sterile 4"x 4" gauze sponges - for washing wounds and compresses

·                     Disposable diapers or roll cotton - for compresses and bandage padding

·                     6" stretch gauze (Kling) rolls - to keep padding in place

·                     3" sterile non-stretch pads ("telfa") -  to cover wound

·                     Nitrofurazone powder or ointment

·                     Bandage scissors

·                     Adhesive and duct tape

·                     Clean bucket

·                     Rope and halter

·                     Hoof pick

·                     Twitch

·                     Clipper

·                     Fly spray

·                     Electrolytes (powder or gel) - for when your horse is working hard

Promptly restock items once you've used them. Depending on your horse's medical history, other items may be required in your first aid kit.
